Smart Transformation in Satellite Imagery Acquisition

The Smart Transformation in Satellite Imagery Acquisition is an innovative transformation feature that aims to accelerate and simplify the process of selecting and ordering satellite images from various satellite data providers using artificial intelligence technologies. The platform is based on the concept of an “Intelligent Assistant”, an AI-powered system that analyzes user requirements and automatically recommends the most suitable satellite. This minimizes the need for specialized technical knowledge and reduces the time and effort required to access the appropriate satellite data.

It addresses several existing challenges, including: • The multiplicity of service providers and the difficulty of dealing with each one separately. • Delayed responses due to lengthy request procedures. • Difficulty in choosing the most suitable satellite due to the diversity of specifications and options. • Increased operational costs resulting from complex administrative and technical processes. Through this feature, we can reduce both cost and time associated with satellite selection using the intelligent assistant—without the need to switch between providers or review complex image specifications. This supports the “We the UAE 2031” vision, particularly in fostering a leading ecosystem and a future-focused, proactive government. It also enhances the UAE’s position as a global hub for space data and smart transformation.

During the Pilot Testing phase, more than 11 entities from both government and private sectors participated, reflecting partner trust and the practical value of the service. In partnership with Space42, the platform will first be made available free of charge to partners of the SAS Program (Space Analytics and Solutions Program) to support researchers, entrepreneurs, and startups in developing innovative and economically viable space applications. Other government and private sector entities can access the service through commercial agreements with Space42, ensuring the platform’s sustainability and expansion on a national level in the future.

• Free for SAS Program partners to support research and development. • Commercial for other government and private entities through contracts with Space42, according to the approved usage policies.

The platform provides a virtual intelligent assistant that uses Generative AI (LLM) to automatically recommend the most suitable satellite based on user requirements. It applies AI algorithms and machine learning models to analyze user needs and automatically determine the optimal satellite and provider based on data type, required resolution, geographic area, and timing. It also offers an interactive chat interface (AI Advisor) to guide the user step-by-step.

This feature was introduced in the GIQ platform in partnership with Space42 and several satellite imagery providers. More than 11 government and private entities participated in the pilot testing phase, and their feedback contributed to improving platform performance and user experience.

The GIQ.AE Space Data Center serves as the core infrastructure supporting the new service. Based on results from the first cycle of transformational projects in 2023, the platform currently offers several services, including: 1. The ability to request archived or new satellite images through global space agencies and leading private companies. 2. Access to AI models and analytical applications for satellite image analysis. 3. A marketplace for space-related services and applications. The image request mechanism has been enhanced with the AI-powered assistant, which uses Generative AI (LLM) to automatically recommend the most suitable satellite based on user requirements.

• It provides instant integration with more than 10 satellite image providers, offering access to over 300 satellites. • It delivers AI-recommended instant responses without requiring advanced technical expertise. • It significantly reduces operational costs through automation and accurate satellite selection.

• Development of the next-generation GIQ.AE platform, enabling the “Intelligent Satellite Assistant” service. • Successful completion of the pilot phase by mid-2025 in collaboration with local entities. • Establishment of performance indicators, targeting a +50% growth in requests by 2027.

By reducing the waste of space resources, increasing data usage efficiency, and enabling researchers and innovators to develop new space applications. The project also provides a digital marketplace for exchanging models and services between the public and private sectors.

The project will begin an expanded operational phase in cooperation with partners, with plans to broaden the service’s scope to include the research, academic, and startup sectors, strengthening the space innovation ecosystem in the UAE.

The platform offers access to a diverse range of 7 global satellite imagery providers, including: • Airbus • NASA (Landsat) • Maxar • Planet • European Space Agency (Sentinel-1 & Sentinel-2) • Umbra • Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) Together, these organizations operate more than 300 satellites, providing comprehensive global coverage and a wide spectrum of advanced imaging capabilities—ranging from high-resolution optical imagery and radar data for all-weather observation to multispectral imagery and temporal analytics. Thanks to this diversity, the platform offers multiple options to meet user needs across scientific research, government applications, and commercial projects.

Annotation

A detection in gIQ is the results from the AI models. They generate detections, normally as a bounding box, which indicates that an object or feature has been detected. An annotation is defined as a bounding box which can be used for AI model training. In other words, a detection is the output for a model, an annotation is the input for model generation.

Yes! This is one of the primary workflows within the product and allows a user to obtain semi-automatic annotations.

As a user, you can take the detections from a model and convert them into annotations. Trhough the workflows available, you can curate these to rapidly build your annotation dataset for model development.

SAM will be available soon!

Data

You can use the data ordering features of gIQ to place new data orders from Bayanat. Bayanat supports numerous satellite providers, including ICEYE, Satellogic, and many more! Don't know which supplier you need? Tell us what you are trying to achieve and we can make recommendations to you.

Yes! As long as your data is in the formats which are compatible with the product, you can upload your data through the file management section.

Your data is secured inside your organisation's own tennant on G42 cloud. No other organisation will be able to view or access your data.

Yes, the owner of a dataset has the power to delete their own data. Due to the danger of such an action it is not possible to do a mass deletion action.

Bayanat finance team will reach out to you with an invoice. Please follow the steps on this invoice. There will be an alternative payment gateway in time.

Not yet. We are constantly working with our suppliers to diversify the offering in the product, so watch this space!

Analytics

Yes, you can visualise multispectral satellite data in gIQ. There are options available for the band rendering, allowing a user to select which band is applied in which channel. In time, we will also offer more advanced functionality, such as band mathematics.

Yes! As long as that data is in CSV format, it can be ingested into the system. There is slightly more complexity with CSV ingestion than other datatypes to allow for the visualisation of the tabular data. This will power the display of geospatial time series!

The 3D functionality of gIQ is being enhanced constantly. We currently have the ability to ingest 3D building data and are working on other components of 3D data. While this does not constitute a digital twin, it is a step in this direction.

We have a change detection algorithm which is currently in production. This will work with optical data and generate a change mask. For SAR, we have the ability to conduct MTCD products and will deploy it into the product soon.
